However, the opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect the position or policy of the United States Office of Education, and no official endorsement by it should be inferred. iii INTRODUCTION In 1972 the Council for Wisconsin Writers asked the Wisconsin Library Association to assist in selecting authors to be included in the Wisconsin Authors Hall of Honor. The Interim Committee on Literary Awards, which was appointed by WLA, very quickly discovered that there existed no currept comprehensive bibliography of Wisconsin writers from which to work. One of the committee's first recommendations, therefore, was that such a bibliography be prepared. The Division for Library Services reviewed the recommendation and concluded that the project was too great to be undertaken as an added staff responsibility and too important to be postponed. It secured a limited amount of Library Services and Construction Act funds, hired an enthusiastic project director, and launched the first phase of the bibliography. The project director, Orrilla T. Blackshear, brought to the enterprise a lifetime interest in Wisconsin writing and a librarian's perspective on the bibliographic difficulties of such an undertaking. Following the counsel of the WLA Committee on Literary Awards, a questionnaire was prepared to elicit further suggestions from Wisconsin librarians concerning the scope, organization and format of the bibliography. By mid-1973 the project had reached some definition and the collection of data was well under way. Its purpose was to compile a comprehensive bibliography of Wisconsin writers, past and present. It was soon evident that the output of writing in Wisconsin is indeed prodigious. In 1937, when the Wisconsin Library Association published Mary Emogene Hazeltine's One Hundred Years of Wisconsin Authorship, it identified about 900 Wisconsin authors. By 1975, when the research was completed, approximately 5300 authors who met the criteria for inclusion had been identified. In the next phase of the project, the collected data was sorted, revised, edited, and finally shaped into this volume, Wisconsin Authors and Their Books. The Publications Office of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction agreed to publish and distribute the bibliography, and provided much valuable assistance with the final preparations. The attempt to produce a truly "comprehensive and definitive bibliography" is clearly an impossible task. It is hoped that the users of the list will help to correct the errors, point out the omissions, and aid in the preparation of a future edition. John Kopischke July, 1976 iv PREFACE More information about Wisconsin's writers has been needed for some years. The last compilation of Wisconsin authors was published in 1937. Since that time various librarians or authors have published regional lists and authors in print for a specific period, and the State Historical Society has compiled annual lists of author's writings. The present publication of Wisconsin Authors and Their Books is quite different from previous bibliographies in its inclusions and in its format. Past bibliographies of Wisconsin authors and their criteria are: 1. Hawley, Emma Alethea. Bibliography of Wisconsin Authors, being a list of books and other publicatibns, written by Wisconsin authors, in the library of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, prepared under the direction of Reuben Gold Thwaites and Isaac Samuel Bradley, by Emma Alethea Hawley. 1893, Democrat Printing, State Printers, Madison, Wisconsin. Criteria: Authors born or reared within the state-like Hamlin Garland-but achieving literary reputation after leaving Wisconsin, have not been included; in the case of many authors who lived but for a short time in the state-as James G. Percival-we give only such of their writings as were published while residents; in the case of men who have done the largest part of their work in the state, but who have since removed from it-John Bascom-for instance-we have given all of their writings until they left, even those published before coming to Wisconsin; another class of writers, recently arrived and still living here--State University professors for example, are represented in this list by all of their publications to date. This is the oldest bibliography of Wisconsin authors-it includes not only books and pamphlets by Wisconsin authors but also their articles in magazines, in papers, in published transactions of learned and industrial bodies, contributions to collected works, etc. whether in the library or not. 2. Hazeltine, Mary Emogene. One Hundred Years of Wisconsin Authorship, 1836-1937. A contribution to a bibliography of books by Wisconsin authors, by Mary Emogene Hazeltine with the editorial assistance of Harriet Esther Evert and the cooperation of Wisconsin librarians. Wisconsin Library Association, 1937. Criteria: Authors of erudite treatises, manuals, textbooks, and similar publications are omitted. A Wisconsin author was defined to be: (1) One who was born in Wisconsin or has had long residence in the state; (2) One who can claim residence for a considerable period; (3) One who has lived in Wisconsin long enough to have used Wisconsin material effectively, or to reflect its spirit, or to have made a contribution to its life or institutions. The author must have published at least one book. 3. "Wisconsin's Own" Library. This is not a bibliography but a book collection. The collection of books by Wisconsin authors was begun by Mary Rennebohm when she was president of Federated Women's Clubs of Wisconsin: Books have been collected from clubs in Wisconsin communities since 1949. The criteria for placing a book in "Wisconsin's Own" Library are simply "that the author of the book under consideration either was born in Wisconsin or has resided here at some time of his life." v The collection is housed at the State Historical Library and has its own catalog. It numbers approximately 2000 volumes. Other titles are added annually by Celia Tatum, who has been a volunteer in this capacity for some years. These books may be studied at the Society Library but may not be borrowed. Books listed in the first bibliography, 1893, and in the Hazeltine bibliography, 1937, have been included in this latest bibliography, in an effort to consolidate the record of books written and published by Wisconsin authors since 1836. Criteria: For this bibliography a Wisconsin author is considered to be: (1) One who has had residence in Wisconsin. (2) One who has published one or more books. It has not been the intention to include these categories of books: (1) Single speeches or lectures (2) Publications of fraternal orders (3) Single magazine or newspaper articles (4) Graduate theses and dissertations (5) Sermons (6) State and federal government documents. A search was made to locate birth and death dates. They are included for many of the authors as are the locations in this state with which each author was most frequently associated. When no location was found there was other evidence to indicate that the person under consideration had lived in Wisconsin. Funds did not permit the inclusion of biographical information. A record of the books written and published by each author is listed in chronological order by publication dates following the author entry. Number of editions of a book is noted wherever known and location of publishing is given wherever known if the book was published by the author. There are approximately 5100 authors whose works are included. The titles include some technical, scientific, medical and legal books. Such titles were deemed important to give a perspective of the kind of writing being done in Wisconsin. In some instances the titles in a specific area show the growth of an industry, e.g. publications of researchers at the Institute of Paper Chemistry reporting on the results of their experiments record some history-making contributions of that industry in this state. A large number of early and quite recent family histories were included for the record they give of various periods in local community history in this state. From the beginning of Wisconsin's history there have been record-keepers, historians, poets, novelists, essayists and biographers. As time went on more writers were concerned with nature, conservation, education, politics and government, social issues, the arts and writing for children. Trends in the writing of Wisconsin's authors in the past 25 years have been greatly influenced by the scholarly work that has come from graduates and professors of this state's colleges and universities. Almost every subject area of writing has been enriched by writers who have lived in the state while they studied or taught. Other long-time residents have not confined all of their writing to Wisconsin subjects, but have been interested in subjects beyond the state's boundaries. The activities of the writing community have encouraged writers. The Council for Wisconsin Writers, Inc. through its program of annual workshops, conferences and awards has been a stimulating influence. The establishment of a Wisconsin Library Association annual award, first given in 1973, had for its purpose the honoring of a work by a single Wisconsin author. The award book must carry the marks of one which has made and will continue to make a contribution to the world of vi literature. A grant from the George C. Banta Company, Inc. of Menasha, Wisconsin, makes this award possible. Why prepare an inclusive bibliography of Wisconsin authors? That question has been asked in the process of preparation and will be asked again after the bibliography has been published. What good is it? Looking at the total-or the near total of Wisconsin writing-can one learn anything specific about who we are, what we have been or what we aspire to? In the broad summary it will be difficult to discern distinct characteristics. But from this total someone else may be able to sort out the essential elements. Frederick Jackson Turner wrote, "American literature is not a single thing. It is a choral song of many sections." We hope that Wisconsin Authors and Their Books will be a guide for anyone who is searching to identify Wisconsin's unique voice. Orrilla T. Blackshear July, 1976 vii ACKNOWLEDGMEN~US The preparation that has brought this bibliography to publication has involved a number of persons who were dedicated to the idea that it was important to have an up-to-date record of Wisconsin authors. It would be impossible to personally thank each librarian, author, newspaper editor, publisher, friend or relative of an author, or interested reader for help generously given. Encouragement came from the Wisconsin Library Association's Literary Awards Committee and a number of librarians throughout this state. Wisconsin authors also urged that the record of the writing of their colleagues be brought together. If there is one person who deserves more gratitude and appreciation than any other, that person is John Kopischke, director, Bureau for Reference and Loan Services, Division for Library Services, Department of Public Instruction. His conviction that a bibliography could be made and his constant encouragement that the project was worth doing have brought it to this point. Never was a supervisor more kind and gracious, more helpful and knowledgeable about how, where and when to bring this three-year project to completion. My gratitude and admiration for all that he has done is great. Others who helped in gathering information for the bibliography are four searchers who worked for various periods of time: Margaret Lahti, Dorothy Batt, Judy Kessenich and Crystal May Fett. In addition to searching, Mrs. Fett assisted in coordinating the work of the two typists: Anne Meisel and Cynthia Marguerite Britton. Mary Bandt extended her duties as secretary to include assistance to the project in a variety of ways. All of these workers were diligent in the performance of their duties and dedicated to the completion of this project. Other members of the Reference and Loan Library staff were kind about giving information whenever possible. Clippings about Wisconsin writers and a substantial number of cards, collected over a ten- year period in the hope of doing an up-date of the Hazeltine bibliography were contributed by Gladys Cavanagh. Files of Memo, a publication of the University of Wisconsin distributed to faculty twice a month since 1949, were made available to us for checking in the Archives of Steenbock Library. The University of Wisconsin Press (Mr. Robinson in charge of Sales) made the long- standing file of their catalogs available for our use. The Cooperative Children's Book Center, Madison, Mary Carr, Librarian, made their file of Wisconsin authors of children's books available for examination. Other organizations and librarians who were helpful in furnishing specific data were: The Council for Wisconsin Writers Wisconsin Regional Writers Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets Office of the Secretary of Faculty, University of Wisconsin "Wisconsin's Own" Library, Celia Tatum Milwaukee Public Library Madison Public Library La Crosse County Library (for Western Wisconsin Writers reading list, prepared by Chester Oien) State Historical Society Library University Memorial Library Many local weekly newspaper editors who were consulted by telephone. For responsible. all assistance given by many people I am truly grateful. For all errors or omissions I am Orilla T.
